The Haitian League - 2nd Annual International Haitian Diaspora Unity Congress

The second international congress on the challenges facing the Haitian Diaspora and the promoting sustainable economic development in Haiti, will take place on August 6 - 9, 2009 at the Trump International Beach Resorts in Miami Beach, FL. This year's second annual international event themed "Diaspora Unity Congress" is being organized by the Haitian League, the cooperation of its chapters and affiliates and other supporting organizations and agencies.

The purpose of the 2009 Congress -- "La Grande Reunion de la Famille Haitienne" -- is to combine and captalize on the Diaspora resources (intellectual, financial, etc.) to develop solution-oriented strategies to aid Haitians at home and abroad. For Haiti, the emphasis will be on ways to return the country to economic independence -- water management, agricultural productivity, reforestation and ecological restoration, and a jump-start tourism/ecotourism. As for the Diaspora, the emphasis will be on ways to facilitate its immersion/integration - civic, educational and employment opportunities, overcoming poverty, declining earnings, and justice inequality -- into the fabric of their adopted country. Participants will also review the implementation of the first Congress and ways to increase investments in Haiti, including tackling impending barriers as dual nationality.

Participants are expected to gain a consensus on how to best tackle the challenges of Haiti's underdevelopment, and to best leverage our adopted lands' capital (educational, electoral, etc) to bring change to Haiti and improve our children's future and ours. It is estimated that some 4.5 million Haitians and upward have fled their deforested homeland are marginally in the polarized Diaspora. "The choice is either to help rebuild the hurricane-ravaged Haiti with a fair, equitable and sustainable economy, or else find another country or countries willing to absorb more refugees with dignity," said Bernier Lauredan, President of the Haitian League. "The time for choice is now," he added.

This is the right time to convene to find real long-term solutions to issues that plague Haitians in and out of Haiti. We thank you in advance and look forward to your contribution and active participation.
